FAQs

  • Q: Just what the heck is this DnD thing, anyway? D&D? DandD??

A: You can spell it however you like! That’s the best part of playing D(and/&/n)D…it can be whatever you want it to be. Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy Role-Playing Game (RPG) where a group of adventurers (controlled by you, the player, and your adventurous co-players) travel an imaginary world in search of adventure, plunder, and fame (or infamy). Along the way, you make all the decisions about what your character does (or attempts to d), and roll dice to determine whether you succeed or fail.

Through a mix of puzzles/problem-solving, combat scenarios, and social interactions with other PCs (Player Characters) and the rest of this world, the adventuring party progresses through the game, otherwise known as a “campaign”. These can last anywhere between a single four-hour session (a “one-off”) and…well, years! Some groups have weekly games, playing their favorite characters in an ongoing campaign for decades.

  • Q: Love it! So…how do you play?

A: Dungeons & Dragons (and other similar games) run on a “D20” system, where a series of dice determine the success (or failure) of your party, or group, of adventurers. Other than that, anything goes! You can find yourself in a battle with a cranky swamp hag, or negotiating your way off a pirate’s plank, and the best part is: you the player are creating the story with nothing but your imagination and a sharp pencil. You just need a group of players (3-6 is optimal) and someone to run the game by creating the story, the scenarios, and the battles in which your adventuring party finds itself.

This person is called the Dungeon Master (or DM, for short), and they are responsible for bringing you through the adventure and making it memorable. In most cases, they also build out encounters (battles) and provide the voice of the “narrator”, as well as all of the NPCs (Non Player Characters) and monsters who inhabit the world and interact with your party. If you’re lucky, your DM is knowledgeable about the rules and nuances about game-play, and can create a fun experience that moves at an exhilarating pace.

  • Q: Why should I hire a DM?

A: Great question! You must have a high INT mod. No idea what that means? That’s why you should hire a DM! If you’re reading this, there’s a decent chance you’re looking to get into D&D for the first time. Better yet, you and your friends tried to teach yourselves to play, and failed miserably. Trust us: you’ll want an experienced professional DM to make your first experience an unforgettable one.

Oh, you’re a veteran, you say? Seen it all, you say? Impossible, we say! D&D is a world of endless possibilities, and with our custom-built homebrew campaigns, you’re sure to get a unique experience unlike any you’ve had before.

No matter what your experience level, nothing is worse than sitting around a table where all the players are scratching their heads as they pore over the rules…and believe us, RPGs tend to have a lot of rules. But with a Professional Dungeon Master, you’ll be taking your game to the Literal Next Level.

  • Q: What can my kids gain from playing TTRPGs? Wait…Could I get that stuff too?!

A: D&D brings us into an imaginative, team-building, socially-immersive world which requires us to “play well with others”. Kids will especially soak up the lessons learned during a 5-person battle on a mountain pass riddled with angry trolls. Studies have shown that cognitive learning from games like D&D can help students out-perform their peers, but moreover, the fun, creative, social aspect of the game is what keeps kids wanting to play it. They’ll learn math, and they’ll have a great time doing it with friends (and learn that sometimes, you need to give your frenemy that last Potion of Healing or the whole party will get TPK’ed).

D&D can also be a great parent-child bonding experience. If all that stuff above sounds cool to you too, why not get your adult friends together and play together with your kids? You may find yourself enjoying it so much, you want to add on a second “adults only” game!

  • Q: I am a n00b, and I see, like, thousands of pages of materials and complex set-ups involved in D&D. This is terrifying!

A: That’s not a question! But we’ll answer it anyway: Yes, D&D has a lot of rules, and a lot of options. But luckily, with the right DM, you can sit back and enjoy the imaginative story-building aspect and leave the heavy dice-lifting to us. Best of all, Tabletop Now provides EVERYTHING you’ll need to play, and we’re so nice that we’ll even set up all the battle map encounters and provide nifty bronze or 3D-printed tokens for your characters. Neat, right?

Once you’ve realized D&D is now your entire life, you’re more than welcome to branch off and grab your own copy of the Player’s Handbook or buy your own personal set of dice. You can even custom-design your own 3D miniature character token and have it printed and mailed to your home! We here at Tabletop Now strive to create a memorable, unique game which you and your friends, family, or co-workers (or complete strangers you met at your first session) will talk about for years to come. • Q: I have been lured into the glorious and enticing world of TTRPGs (Tabletop Role-Playing Games), but I don’t know anyone who wants to play! Am I doomed?

A: Nay! Thanks to our matchmaking program, we can bring together like-minded players (of similar experience levels) together for a fun evening of gaming…which may end up turning into a weekly ritual with new friends! Just send us an inquiry and our busy team of Scheduling Gnomes can get to work on finding the perfect group and game for YOU!

  • Q: Uh…What’s with all these letters and numbers I see? Is this….math??

A: TTRPGs can seem incredibly intimidating at first, and who really wants to do MATH when they are trying to have fun? Don’t worry! If you can count to 20, a good DM can walk you through the nitty-gritty and fine print without you having to break a sweat (or a pencil). So don’t let those long manuals and complex character sheets scare you off; at Tabletop Now, we make the game accessible to everyone, no matter their experience level or their lack of a PhD in Mathematics.

  • Q: Wait, all that sounds great for a corporate team-building exercise too…Can I bring this to my place of work?

A: Sure! Either live in-office, or virtually in a Zoom meeting, we can help spice up your team events by running games specifically designed to enhance communication and collaboration in the workplace (plus it’s way more fun than trust falls). D&D is proven to increase socialization skills among players of all ages, including team-building, collaborative story-telling, group problem-solving, and critical thinking. It’s also a great ice-breaker if you’re looking to get to know other members of your team.

  • Q: Great! How do I get started?

A: Whether you have a group waiting to play or are a solo player looking for adventure, just shoot us a message and we’ll schedule a game based on your needs. Click here to leave us an inquiry and let us know what you’re looking for.

From there, we can discuss the kind of game you’d like to play, help you and your group create characters, and schedule your first game, either virtual or in-person. And of course, your DM will be with you every step of the way to make sure everything goes smoothly.
